For the past year or so, almost every Windows 11 update has arrived with new AI features bolted on. Some were useful. Many felt like they were included because Microsoft could include them, not because businesses needed them.
The most recent Windows 11 preview builds take a noticeably different approach. The focus is on making the operating system faster and less frustrating to use - and for businesses managing a team of computers, that is actually quite welcome.
The headline improvements in the latest Windows 11 preview centre on three areas.
Faster wake from sleep. Laptops and desktops will resume from sleep more quickly. This sounds like a small thing but across a team it adds up - particularly for people who open their laptop at the start of a call or meeting and are left waiting for the machine to catch up.
A snappier File Explorer. File Explorer - the tool people use to navigate folders and files - has been rebuilt to perform faster, particularly when browsing large folders or network drives. Again, not dramatic. But a noticeably better experience in day-to-day use.
Connection speed in the taskbar. Users will now be able to check their internet connection speed directly from the taskbar without opening a browser or third-party tool. A small quality-of-life improvement that removes one small friction point from the working day.
What makes this update worth noting is not the scale of the changes - it is the direction. Microsoft appears to be listening to feedback that businesses want their computers to work reliably and quickly, not to be a platform for new features that require training and adjustment.
For owner-led businesses, this is relevant. When IT changes feel disruptive, teams resist them. When changes are invisible improvements to speed and reliability, they tend to be welcomed. This is an update that should land quietly and positively.
The improvements are currently in Windows Insider preview builds, which means they are in testing and not yet in the stable release. Based on Microsoft's typical release schedule, businesses running standard Windows 11 updates should start to see these changes rolled out over the coming months.
